A French Ormolu-Mounted Kingwood And Tulipwood Bureau Plat  After The Model By Charles Cressent Attributed To Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis Beurdeley, Paris 19th Century Tooled green leather top, with detailed ormolu mounts, two drawers with ormolu hardware to apron, two false drawers on reverse, each side has a pull-out writing slide with tooled green leather. Height 31 ½ in. Width 51 ½ in. Depth 28 ½ in. Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley French, 1808-1882 The Beurdeley family is one of the most important dynasty of furniture makers of the 19th century. Three generations, working from 1818 to 1895, achieved the highest standards of quality. The Beurdeley are very renowned for their extraordinary metalwork. The ormolu mounts on their furniture are always of the best quality. Using the techniques of mercurial gilding and hand chasing, they can easily compare to the 18th century bronze makers. The founder of the dynasty, Jean Beurdeley (1772-1853), sat up in Paris in 1804. There he started a small company and steadily built a reputation. Established by 1804 at 355, rue Saint-Honoré until 1818 and 364, rue Saint-Honoré from 1820 to 1839, he moved then to the famous Hanover pavilion situated on the corner of rue Louis-le-Grand and Boulevard des Italiens, having already met success at this time. His son, Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley (1808-1882), was to become famous. He took over his father’s business, still located at the Hanover Pavilion where he was creating furniture mainly inspired by Louis XVI period. Louis Beurdeley was one of the most talented craftsmen both for furniture and works of the second half of the 19th century. Under the Second Empire he became one of the main suppliers for the Garde Meuble Impérial. He created furniture for the wedding of Napoléon III and Empress Eugénie and was a purveyor to many European royal families. He also participated in the Universal Exhibitions in Paris in 1855 and 1867 where he received many medals for the high quality and originality of his work. Louis Beurdeley used to stamp his work with the initials “BY”. Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis Beurdeley (1847-1919), started working with his father and eventually succeeded him in 1875 and went on with the same style until the end of the company in 1895. He kept the shop at Hanover Pavilion and also had workshops at 20 and 24, rue Dautancourt. He achieved great success like his father. Along with Dasson, Grohé, Fourdinois, the other famous ebenists of the time, he took part in the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris were he was awarded the gold medal. This glory allowed him to open a shop in New York. His participation in the 1883 Amsterdam Universal Exhibition proved him even more successful and he soon became Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest official mark of recognition. Beurdeley stopped trading in 1895 and the stock was sold in auctions. Charles Cressent French, 1685–1768 Charles was a French furniture-maker, sculptor and fondeur-ciseleur of the régence style. As the second son of François Cressent, sculpteur du roi, and grandson of Charles Cressent, a furniture-maker of Amiens, who also became a sculptor, he inherited the tastes and aptitudes which were likely to make a finished designer and craftsman. Even more important perhaps was the fact that he was a pupil of André Charles Boulle. Trained in such surroundings, it is not surprising that he should have reached a degree of achievement which has to a great extent justified the claim that he was the best decorative artist of the 18th century. Cressent's distinction is closely connected with the regency, but his earlier work had affinities with the school of Boulle, while his later pieces were full of originality. He was likewise a sculptor, and among his plastic work is known to have been a bronze bust of Louis, the son of Philip II, Duke of Orléans, for whom Cressent had made one of the finest examples of French furniture of the 18th century the famous medaillier now in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Cressent's bronze mounts were executed with a sharpness of finish and a grace and vigour of outline which were hardly excelled by his great contemporary Jacques Caffieri. His female figures placed at the corners of tables are indeed among the most delicious achievements of the great days of the French metal worker.
