About the Item
The “Platone” folding desk, designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli in the 1970s, represents one of the most ingenious examples of Italian modernist furniture. Conceived during an era when space-saving solutions and radical aesthetics were in high demand, this piece combines practicality with playful design.
The desk is composed of a chrome-plated tubular steel frame supporting a folding top in molded plastic, here presented in a striking blue with embossed decorative motifs. The top folds down easily, allowing the piece to be stored flat, making it ideal for compact living spaces while retaining a strong design identity.
Giancarlo Piretti, best known for his celebrated “Plia” chair, brought the same ingenuity and democratic design ethos to the Platone. The desk’s versatility, portability, and bold use of color situate it within the broader radical design movement of the 1970s, where everyday furniture became both functional and expressive.
This example is in very good vintage condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. Collectors highly value Platone desks for their rarity and historical significance as icons of Italian industrial design.
A rare opportunity to acquire a multifunctional, collectible desk that embodies the spirit of 1970s Italian design.

He obtained his teaching degree in drawing at the Art Institute of Bologna (dates unknown), and continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 1960. From 1963 until 1970, he taught interior design at the Art Institute of Bologna.

During his twelve years at Castelli, Piretti obtained numerous industrial patents for his designs, which were mostly chairs. Piretti’s work for Castelli garnered the company an international reputation in furniture design. His most well-known design is the plastic folding Plia Chair (1968), which has sold over seven million copies since 1969 and is still in production. It won the BIO 5 distinction and the SMAU prize at the Ljubljana Biennial in 1971, Germany’s Gute Form prize in 1973, and can be found in permanent collections in various museums world-wide, including Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia and the United States. In 1969 the complementary Plia Table...
