About
Jacques Hitier (1917–1999) was a French interior architect and designer. He also held the position of Director of the Paris L’École Boulle, School for Fine Arts & Crafts. He is often referred to as one of Frances’ prominent figures of the decorative arts. In 1939, Hitier was hired by Mobilor to lead their design and manufacturing processes. Primarily Mobilor made robust school furniture but with Hitier’s involvement, his organic curves and metal frames quickly became a home staple, and a recurring motif in French modernism.
This desk is defined by an asymmetric curved top and tubular steel frame, with a set of drawers that are very nicely detailed with dovetail joins and curved profiles. This piece is hardwearing yet elegant and is a very good example of Hitier’s work. The desk remains in very good vintage condition with minor surface marks and scratches across its surfaces. The original veneered top showed discoloration and marking and so has been restored.
