About the Item

Folding desk designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. As Zalszupin gained more and more momentum with his practice during the early and mid-fifties, he started working with architect Oscar Niemeyer to do commissioned projects for the new capital of Brasilia, which was the perfect opportunity to implement his design language. These folding desks are part of a series of desks that belonged to ESAF – Escola de Administração Fazendária, or School of Farm Administration which was extinguished in January 2019 and incorporated into the Ministry of Economy. ESAF was incorporated into ENAP - National School of Public Administration, and in this process, it was decided to maintain more current furniture, already used by ENAP. The original labels are still on most of the desk tables. The entire desk is covered with Rosewood patchwork veneer and has a centre slat wrapped in black leatherette. The slat provides stability when folded open and locked into place and also makes it possible to fold the desk easily when folded down. This patchwork finishing was the characteristic feature of Zalszupins work; the collage using several pieces of sheets of jacaranda wood, with different tones, in the composition of panels from the desk. This was an initiative for the rationalization and use of left-over scraps of wood available at the factory, allowing, at the same time a combination of their different colourings. Most desks have the original L’Atelier sticker on the underside of the tabletop. Geraldo de Barros writing desk Unilabor Brazil 1956
By Geraldo de Barros, Unilabor
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Very nice minimalistic small writing desk designed by Geraldo de Barros and manufactured by Unilabor, Brazil 1956. The desk is made up of three main parts. The black iron frame, rosewood finished top and the drawer cabinet. The drawer fronts have the characteristic white laminated finish with metal handles. Unilabor could use these same parts to create different furniture designs, following the company's standards. This approach was part of a methodical way of making things, and the design style was common to other factories of that time. The most unique idea was how they thought about the production process in an organised way. In very good condition with beautiful grain to the rosewood. The chair on the pictures is not included. Literature;  Brazilian Modern Design Alberto Vicente Marcelo Vasconcellos 2017, page 264-281 The most profound conceptual experience in the production of modern furniture in Brazil was led by Geraldo de Barros, a major artist of the Concrete Art movement in the country. Interested in new technologies and processes, Geraldo's career was consistently permeated with artistic experiments, particularly in photography and painting. His affiliation with design was influenced by the "gute form" principle advocated by Max Bill. Bill was the founder of the Ulm School...

Jorge Zalszupin Rosewood foldable Desk, Brazilian Midcentury
By Jorge Zalszupin
Located in New York, NY
Writing desk designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his company, L'atelier. This piece is covered with rectangular pieces of marquetry wood, a creative resource developed by Zalszupin. The technique consists of gluing several pieces of rosewood leaves of different textures and shades on a furniture surface, which forms a beautiful wood patchwork. This feature allows large surfaces to be coated with a larger visual unit, making it easier to combine different furniture together. This writing desk is a dynamic piece, which can be used both in the corporate and domestic places, a characteristic very present in Zalszupin's production. About his marquetry technique, Zalzszupin affirms: "I thought about combining several patterns of rosewood, lighter, darker, with different types of veins, that is, creating a new pattern for all desks...
