About the Item

Absolute extraordinary and rare late 18th century roll top writing desk from the period around 1790/1800 in Austria. This noteworthy, elegantly designed nutwood writing desk was artfully handcrafted in the transition period from the so-called "Josephinism" (1780-1790) to the famous Empire era (1800 - 1815). The extravagant executed mirrored veneer work as well as the superb shape, reflects perfectly the form language of this famous, long past period. According to the previous owner´s story who owned the castle where we found this outstanding looking, valuable Empire roll top desk, this antique kneehole desk was especially made on behalf of his ancestors. A one of a kind piece of valuable late 18th century office furniture providing six drawers (three on each side) and one lockable drawer in the center. The mentioned drawers on the sides can be locked with a mechanism by moving bolts on the inner side walls (see pictures #14 & 15). One of the great highlights - and there are a lot - is the exceptional roll top, which shows dreamlike patterns created through the use of elaborately mirrored veneer (picture #7). Even the edge of the folding front is so impressive - just see the gorgeous branch patterns on picture #10. When you roll up the lockable top, a beautiful red felt upholstered writing surface/ working space opens to the viewer´s eye which holds another five small, practical drawers for your writing utensils. Ebonized accents, arftully worked brass fittings and a traditional hand-polished shellac finish completes the magnificent look of this precious late 18th century writing desk from Austria. Not only an eye-catching piece of valuable Empire furniture but also a great investment for the future. PLEASE NOTE: this fantastic 18th century Empire writing desk comes in great old restored, ready to use condition. On customer request (and additional charge) we can also undertake a full restoration of this marvelous writing desk. In case you are interested - just get in touch with us.

Located in Lichtenberg, AT
Splendid early 19th century Biedermeier secretaire/ secretary desk from the renowed period in Vienna/ Austria around 1820/25. A spectacular, early example of a Biedermeier secretary which has been venereed with finest mirror-matched nutwood, showing an extraordinary grain - just see how elegantly the grain pattern runs down from the top to the base without any visible interuption. This perfect sized Biedermeier secretaire impresses with its cambered worked doors, a drawer on the top and a fold-down writing surface. Influenced by the previous empire epoch, this superb, antique secretary is adorned by two beautifully worked full columns. When you fold down the lockable writing surface, the amazing designed interior opens up to the viewer´s eye: 9 small drawers and another large one on top, architecturally structured with ebonized column decoration and the still original mirror (unfortunately cracked - see picture#18) in the back. Artfully worked brass applications with lion heads finalize the spectacular look. Traditionally hand polished with ruby shellac, which gives the surface this lovely slight red brown tone, this breathtaking early Biedermeier secretary...
