A Superior English Regency Period Davenport Desk in Figured Mahogany, Circa 1830

About the Item

The richly figured mahogany case showing a finely turned baluster gallery over a hinged leather topped writing compartment, opening to an interior fitted with small drawers with satinwood fronts & turned pulls. The writing compartment having the added feature of enabling it to slide over the front of the base, thereby allowing for greater ease & comfort when seated in front. The base is flanked on either side by twin draw-out bookshelves, the right side featuring a small retractable drawer fitted for writing implements over four tiers of drawers with original functioning locks & key, the left side is similarly complimented by four tiers of false drawer fronts. The front of the base showing a richly figured mahogany panel sided by hand carved corbel capitals & fluted pilasters, raised overall on turned supports retaining their original brass cup castors. Remnants of a BADA label affixed to one side. Although apparently unsigned, the combination of such fine timbers, quality of construction & design elements are very closely associated with examples by highly regarded British cabinetmaker, Gillows of Lancaster & London. The matter of attribution aside, this is without question a superior example of a Regency Period Davenport Desk, being of very fine timber, exacting proportions and exhibiting exceptional graining, colour and patina.
