About the Item

Pierre Chapo B19 Writing Desk in Patinated Solid Elm, France, 1960s This rare Pierre Chapo B19 writing desk, crafted in solid elmwood in France during the 1960s, is an exceptional example of the designer’s mastery in combining architectural clarity with artisanal tradition. Produced in Chapo’s atelier in Gordes, the desk embodies his signature balance of structure, proportion, and material integrity. The desk consists of a rectangular tabletop resting on a cabinet with four drawers, creating a composition that feels both sculptural and functional. The clever design allows for versatile positioning, as the top is counterbalanced by the cabinet, giving the piece a sense of floating lightness despite its solid construction. The cabinet provides generous storage while the exposed wooden joints reveal Chapo’s precise craftsmanship and respect for traditional joinery techniques. Executed in solid elm, the desk has developed a stunning honey-colored patina that highlights the natural variations of the wood grain. This warm finish not only reflects decades of gentle use but also enhances the timeless aesthetic of the piece. The B19 exemplifies Chapo’s philosophy of merging honest materials with architectural design language, making it equally suitable as a functional workstation or a centerpiece for an interior with strong design sensibilities. Pierre Chapo (1927–1987) remains one of the most celebrated French designers of the 20th century. His works are often compared to Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, and Isamu Noguchi, and are highly sought after by international collectors. The B19 is among his most elegant and versatile desk designs, marrying modernist rigor with the warmth of natural wood.
