About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this exceptionally rare Gothic Revival circa 1840 solid oak partner desk with top drawer writing slope and side bookcases made by either Gillows of Lancaster or Pugin Where to begin, this desk has been on a journey, when I first received the piece it looked like it had been French polished and waxed around 20 times, it had a very clumpy sticky finish, my restorers have stripped back all that horrible guck, they have then lightly stained and French polished it the correct way which has kept all the period patina and simply made it golden, The leather top and writing slope top has been replaced with fully aniline natural cattle hide leather that was plain, I’ve then had my leather polishers dye it this gorgeous whisky brown colour. Lastly there was various small timber repairs which have been done with antique timber. The finished article is a very fine period Gothic revival desk. I have only ever seen desks of this quality made by Gillows of Lancaster and London, the side or back bookcase was something they were well known for as was the writing slope inside the top drawer. They may have had a collaboration with Pugin as many of his designs our found in Gillows works Dimensions Height 85.5cm Width 129cm Depth 62.5cm Legroom Height 72.5cm Width 40cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point Any questions please feel free to ask before you bid This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.

Important Fully Restored Antique Victorian Bookcase Back Leather Top Kidney Desk
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer for sale this Important, fully restored, bookcase back kidney desk attributed to Gillow’s of Lancaster. This is one of the finest desks I have ever owned, the design was originally made by Gillows of Lancaster, you can see the same desk selling for £100,000-£120,000 with other dealers. The piece has been on a journey restoration wise, the top was removed and sent to a desk leather specialist in Brighton, they fitted the finest quality, extra large single piece of cattle hide leather, it was then gold leaf embossed with an oversized geometric boarder and secondarily embossed with a rope twist boarder, the top and base were then taken to London where my third generation trained...
