About the Item

Silvio Cavatorta rare exquisite birch five-drawer desk with brass pulls and ending in brass sabots with matching birch chair with ivory boucle seat and ending in front brass sabots and with back legs slightly kicking out. This elegant stylish desk is a testament to exceptional craftsmanship and sophisticated design and is made of a gorgeous birch veneer with a pronounced birch pattern, raised lipped back and sides of desk top, beautifully ending on brass sabots. The matching birch chair has a wonderful sculptural back which imitates the architectural form of the desk. The seat has been reupholstered in a luxurious Holland & Sherry Brunswick Snow or ivory bouclé. Desk: H 30 x W 41.5 x D 17.5 in. Chair: H 32.25 x W 18.25 x D 18.25 in. Silvio Cavatorta (1899-1957) was an Italian designer. His father, Eugenio Cavatorta founded the furniture and upholstery company Cavatorta in 1869. Silvio, one of thirteen children, started working for the family business after the First World War. He was the main designer for the Cavatorta business, the furniture was mainly intended for complete home or business furnishings. During the Second World War Silvio continued to work, even under German occupation. Silvio his son, Franco (born in 1925) studied to be an architect and graduated in 1950. During his university years he completed internships in the studios of Le Corbusier, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Sven Markelius. Franco Cavatorta was the one to introduce the new style, generally defined as 'Swedish', and took it in production in his father's furniture factory.
