Writing Desk in Solid Walnut by Boyd & Allister
About the Item
This writing desk in solid walnut was originally made as a gift for my daughter on her 13th birthday. I designed it to be elegant, simple and timeless; something that could fit seamlessly into her various homes as she moves through life. The hand-planed detail cut around the top edge of the desk adds to the delicacy of the overall design. The stretchers connecting the front and back legs are fully mortised into the legs so that the endgrain becomes a design element. The stretcher connecting the two sides below is pinned from the outside with visible through dowels that also highlight the handwork involved in making this piece. We always select striking grain for the front skirt of the desk which is also the drawer face. The drawer face steps up slightly from the skirt of the desk and has a cove cut on the bottom edge as a pull. The drawer itself is a 15” deep solid walnut dovetailed drawer mounted with euro style under mount slides. The finish is a durable low sheen spray finish so as to prevent marking from moisture but an oil and wax finish is an option.

Boyd & Allister is a custom furniture studio located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have been hand making furniture for designers and architects around the country since 2010. We custom make each piece using traditional joinery methods and hand select each piece of wood. We source our wood from small sawyers around the country who bring the same level of care to their craft as we bring to ours. Many of our designs are inspired by mid century masters; timeless with clean lines, allowing the beauty of the wood to shine.
