Edmond Spence Six Piece Mahogany Dinning Set for Industria Mueblera, S.A. 1950s

About the Item

The Edmund Spence dining set for the Mexican manufacturer "Industria Mueblera, S.A.” circa 1958 consists of the following six pieces: An extraordinary extendable mahogany dining table. The cast metalwork is gold leafed. The table has Edmund Spence's Industria Mueblera stamp and additional identification stenciled on the underside. The table measures 43.75 x 66 inches closed and has two 12 inch leaves extending its length to 90 inches. An elegant mahogany cabinet which is an example of Edmund Spence's integration of traditional Mexican craft with Mid-Century Modern styling. The subtly grained mahogany three-door credenza has a simple almost oriental leg and stretcher which provide an understated backdrop for the woven grass rope panels. The linear pattern created by the raised panels is a successful minimalist exercise in material, line and shadow. The placement of the diagonal joinery of the cabinet doors mathematically reflect an intentional relationship between these intersections and the weaving of the grass rope. The case is branded on various drawers with Edmund Spence's Industria Mueblera stamp plus further identification is stenciled on the back of the case. The sideboard measures: H. 31.5, W. 60.5, D. 20.25 inches Additional to the dining table and sideboard are four vintage Yucatan side chairs. The solid mahogany framed spindle back chairs with their original woven sea grass seats and sea grass banding are an unusual combination and one of Edmund Spence’s most desirable designs. Their design relates to similar side chairs by George Nakashima and Paul McCobb. The chairs dimensions are: H. 31.5, W. 19, D. 21.5, Seat H. 18 inches The six pieces are in excellent vintage condition. This suite is a superb example of Mexican craftsmanship.
