About the Item

This set of furniture consists of six chairs with arms and back and an octagonal high table made of carved wood, polychrome and gold. The chairs are almost equal to each other (only two of them have the bird painted on the backrest facing to the left), they present the front legs slightly curved in the front area, with an important decoration in this area, towards the top, formed by palms and scrolls, volutes on the sides and curved lines downwards, also carved and gilded area, contrasting on the white background that is presented in the furniture (absent from the seat, with golden grid, rear legs and other areas). The hind legs are of the so-called "saber" because of their shape. The arms draw a smooth curve in the upper part, and a very elaborate forehead both in the form and in the decoration (thick carvings, with volume, of lion heads and volutes). The backrest, has three crossbars painted with lines on the white background and some golden profiles, drawing volutes in the upper part, under the top of golden palms, and a band (wider than the seat) decorated with a combination of motifs vegetables and scrolls carved and others painted (faces with plant elements, a bird in the centre). The octagonal table, also made of carved wood, polychromed and gilded, has an upper board decorated with a simple composition to the outside formed by palms, plant elements, lines and scrolls that, as in the rest of the set, stands out for its quality and its Renaissance influence. The fronts of the same one present a composition similar to the one of the endorsement of the chairs (birds in a tondo flanked by compositions of volutes and vegetal elements and faces with more scrolls to the sides of these last ones). In the corners, the legs stand out: although the shape is similar to the front of the chairs, his work of carving is more prominent (lion head towards the waist of the table, from which two volutes split, a polygonal dice with the laterals decorated with leaves like those on the tabletop and, at the front, a composition with palms, scrolls and vegetal motifs reminiscent of the same legs of the chairs). The chairs have saber back legs, contribution of the French Empire to European furniture, and this same influence is also present in the shape of the backrest. Although white paint, with gold and polychromy of neoclassical influence appear in the Spanish Charles IV furniture (as well as fine legs combined with a wider than normal backing), this style would be a very frequent influence on furniture Spanish of the 19th century. The shape of the arms are very common in the furniture of the Second French Empire (appear between 1821 and 1822), with thick carvings, curved at the start and at the top, where it ends up forming a volute. As for decoration, with a clear Renaissance influence, it became fashionable in France with Luis Felipe from the 1830s. The table, which is striking for its shape, has been decorated with carvings and paintings similar to those of chairs, so that these reasoning’s could also be applied to it. These details, combined, would place the realization of the game in Elizabethan times, towards the second half of the 19th century.
