About the Item

Robin Day Hillestak dining table and chairs by Hille midcentury design, circa 1950 Hillestak dining set by Robin Day for Hille, dining table and four dining chairs, circa 1950, with beech frames and plywood faced backs and seats. Proposed as low-cost furniture and inspired by the plywood work of Aalto and Eames, Robin Day’s Hillestak design proved to be one of Hille’s early successes. Utilizing formed plywood for the seat, back and spine, the Hillestak offered comfort and functionality. The leg design provided for efficient stacking capability with an entirely vertical stack profile. The design allowed for the seat and back to be upholstered and the Hillestak found success in both domestic and commercial interiors. The chair became part of a family of designs with table, desk and side table joining the chair and sharing the A-frame leg. One of the first designs by Robin Day for Hille, the modernist design marked the beginning of a long and fruitful 20 year relationship. Condition report: This set is offered excellent condition, the four chairs having recently been professionally French polished by our furniture restorer. There are minor age related marks to the leading edges, top and sides of the table but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chairs have been expertly reupholstered in a Fine cross woven silk fabric, the chairs have wonderful rich patina, this set is extremely well made, and ready to use, there are no odours or smells, there is no evidence of past or present woodworm or repairs, the chairs have the Hille makers disc to the front of each however one disc is missing to one of the chairs, the table still retains the Hille disc to the underside which could easily be taken off and swapped over to the chair if one wanted.
