Model: 2ATOP PT2_BZ3 Top: Two Joint Single Slabs of Antique Reclaimed Hardwood Top finish: Natural Oiled Base: PT2 base, Sand Cast Bronze Base finish: Sculpture Structure, Black Dimensions: 203 x 134 x 74 cm (w x d x h) 79,9 x 52,8 x 29,6 inch Table number ATOP_PT2.14.76 This is a table which currently sits in our dining room, one great advantage of being a table-maker… We recently moved into a mid-century house and we needed a dinner table which would fit the room, could seat 6 very comfortably and could seat 8guests if need-be. We chose a pair of antique slabs of Chicken-wing wood (Jichi-mu) as this is one of our favorite and rarest hardwoods. Most of the 200 slabs we have in our collection come in pairs since they were used by villagers in Vietnam as day-beds: none of the slabs are ever wider than 80 cm and were placed directly on the floor, one next the other, or on raised platform. People would sit, eat drink sleep on these ‘tables’. We simply thoroughly washed the wood, slightly sanded it and applied 8 layers of oil to really saturate the very old wood. We decided on our PT2 base, cast in bronze, with a black patina with some texture to complement this Fine wood. P. Tendercool, run by Belgians Pieter Compernol and Stephanie Grusenmeyer, is based in Bangkok, Thailand. Stephanie comes from a family of Antique dealers and for over a decade has been collecting truly unique slabs of antique hardwood. We estimate that about 95% of these wonderful slabs we collected over a period of 10 years are about one hundred years old. Inspection of the bottom parts show they were clearly cut by hand, pre-machine age... There are never any traces of legs, nor is there ever any carving, just slabs of amazing harwood. The fact that these wooden slabs still exist is proof of their stone-hard quality, we are not talking pine-wood here: many decades of humid-hot, termite-infested surroundings have had no noticeable effect other than them remaining solid witnesses of a bygone era. They typically have a one-person size: around two-meter long, by about 75-80 cm wide. We almost always find them in pairs: his and hers, Ying and Yang. Which wood? By far the larger number of slabs in our collection is Chicken-wing wood, coveted and cherished by many Chinese as ?Jichimu? since the grain of this wood variety resembles the feathers of a bird. Next to Zitan & Huang-Huali wood, Jichimu has enjoyed a wide following and furniture made with this rare wood has been avidly collected since to the Ming-dynasty. We currently own two hundred slabs, available for selection in our workshop, just across our gallery in Bangkok. We do not know of anyone who has such a large collection of aged slabs as ours. Unfortunately the secret is out: we now have to pay double to triple the price we paid only a couple of years ago. Collectables As former Antiques dealers we are convinced that our ATOP collection will be 'Antiques' to future generations: the wood is already extremely rare and about a hundred years old, the bases sand-cast by hand, and we will let you be the judge of the strength of the design ;) Reason why every table created will receive our burnt-in logo and its unique number stamped at the bottom. We are not discussing ?limited series here?, every single table is unique. Perfect tables? Nope. All our ATOPs are imperfect and we would not have it any other way. Each slab has had a life before P. Tendercool, many generations lived with these slabs, leaving their marks. Slabs are never hyper straight and often are a little warped or show some minor cracks. Important notes Wood finish We have yet to come across The Perfect Wood-Finish. Prior to establishing P. Tendercool in 2009 our family had been antique dealers for over 50 years. We know a thing or two about Old Wood. Eli, our antiques restorer from Belgium, flew over to train our Thai carpenters in traditional Western wood-finishing-techniques. While we can offer Wax, home-made Hot-wax and are experts in the age-old French Polishing, about 95% of our clients prefer an oil finish. Should you be looking for a completely waterproof finish, you may opt for Water-based Polyurethane. All finishes have pros and cons, feel free to enquire for more detail. But fear not: no white gloves are needed to enjoy your furniture! Our furniture is meant to be enjoyed, used and abused. Just apply your common sense: do not let spilled liquids sink in over-night, do not place hot pots and pans directly on the wood. Should you consider buying one of our creations we will explain in details about the do's and don'ts. Sand cast bronze, brass and aluminum We are wood-specialists. We outsource the casting of our metals to a true Bronze-master:: Armando is an Italian who used to work for Salvador Dali way back when...Craft any-one? He moved his foundry from Monza, Italy to Thailand now 30 years ago. His major client is the Vatican. We are truly blessed. He is currently training our team so his vast experience will live on. Please note that the sand-casting process is also completely done by hand, step-by-step, for each base: a traditional and time consuming technique which, as the woodwork we offer, can never be 'Perfect': our bases show traces of this technique: some air-bubbles remain in the metal, some weld-marks will be visible as will some tooling traces: brushed lines, some surfaces will be a bit more matte than others,... Here too you will feel Real People's hands... Photos We take great care when we photograph our creations or produce our samples, but computer monitors differ, colors may not be exactly rendered and BLTs are created by hand, not by Robots. Wear consistent with age and use. Since we use reclaimed wood from Vintage Thai houses, the wood may show traces of restoration, some holes might be filled in (from old wooden pegs), or other marks from the wood's past, which in our view add a unique character to each item we create.
