About the Item
The Amicalola base captures the room set against a round or oval table top. This pedestal base is hand cast by the artisans at Sloss Furnaces historic foundry in Birmingham to look beautiful and function out of the way of diner's feet. Rich with Mid-Century Modern inspiration, we conceived the name while hiking the 600 steel stairs that scale the face of Amicalola Falls, the gateway to the Appalachian Trail. Solid walnut wood is finished with a durable, low-sheen urethane finish.
A study in modern style and simplicity, the silhouette of the black patina base contrasts with the exuberant grain of each wide plank of solid white oak in clear urethane 2PK finish.
Urban wood has character. Character can include variations in color and grain, small pin knots, evidence of historical intrusion. There may be cracks or knots that we fill, patch or join in a considered and artful way at the makers discretion.
We look at every piece of wood or slab and decide what needs a patch or epoxy or both. Case by case, one may be more effective and better for the furniture, aesthetically, structurally, and for our process. If a specific tool, like a patch, is not desired, please specify this when ordering. This may require procuring different lumber which can alter costs.

Since we began in 2014, we have diverted hundreds of logs from the landfill by transforming them into award-winning furniture and products for homes and businesses. Instead of letting trees waste in a landfill, we gather them from municipalities, businesses and homeowners to give them a second life. Urban wood has character. Urban wood has knots, burls and insect holes. It’s not "perfect" — it’s unique, one-of-kind and stunningly beautiful. The constraints and adaptations of growing in the urban forest creates character. We handle each log individually with an eye for the best cut. Then we mill it to show off its inner beauty. Our wood is better for the environment. Urban forests give us cleaner air and cooler temperatures. A living tree provides great value to the community — so can a repurposed one. Historically, felled city trees are taken to the landfill to decompose. Every year, Americans bury 4 billion board feet of usable hardwood trees in our city landfills. Using urban wood keeps them from releasing carbon back into the atmosphere where it contributes to climate change. Using urban wood in long-lasting furniture doesn't matter unless the design is right. Our furniture won Garden and Gun's overall Made in the South award in 2017.
