About the Item

Large antique dining table from Jozef de Coene Belgium Oak Art Deco - 1930s Dimensions: H x W x L: 80 x 104 x 155 cm, extendable to 205 - 255 - 305 cm Description: Length-adjustable dining table by Jozef de Coene, created in the Belgian Art Deco style of the 1930s. A base plate covered with sheet brass in a hammered design supports the six-column table construction with a central top. The oval table top is covered with a chequerboard-like parquetry, which contrasts with fine, reddish-coloured thread inlays on the edge of the solid oak top. The table top is divided in the centre, extendable and can be lengthened in 50 cm increments with three inserts. The extended table is supported by two further pairs of fold-out legs. Interesting facts: The table was probably made in the workshop of Jozef de Coene in Kortrijk, Belgium. The De Coene art workshop was founded in 1905 by Jozef de Coene as a successor business to the upholstery and upholstery shop run by his father Adolphe since 1887. De Coene, who was a painter himself and very committed to art, aimed to merge art, craftsmanship and industry with the newly founded art workshop. Thanks to his innovative approach, he worked with the great designers of the time such as Henry van de Velde, Jean-Baptiste Dewin, Jan-Albert De Bondt, Marcel Breuer, Charlotte Perriand and many others. By specialising in complete furnishings based on its own designs, the company already experienced rapid growth in the 1900s and 1910s and was soon producing furniture in series and on a large scale. Despite or perhaps because of its great success, Jozef de Coene's ambitions extended even further. in 1921, he undertook a study trip to the USA. On his return, he began mass-producing furniture made of laminated wood and took part in international exhibitions in Milan, Paris, Roubaix and Brussels. The innovative furniture from his workshops was honoured with prestigious prizes and medals. In the mid-1930s, the workshop was at the forefront of the European wood industry with almost 3,000 employees. The company was bombed out twice during the war and rebuilt in the 1950s - more successfully than ever. In addition to its large-scale production of plywood furniture, De Coene also took care of the manufacture and sale of the internationally renowned Knoll furniture by designers such as Eero Saarinen and Harry Bertoia. The company was commissioned to plan and build numerous pavilions for the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels and was also represented with its own furniture designs. In the early 1970s, De Coene had branches in Belgium and France as well as sales offices in Germany, France and the Netherlands in addition to its headquarters in Kortrijk, employing a total of around 1,750 people. The De Coene Group was then liquidated in 1977. This led to the founding of several new companies, some of which are still active today.
