About the Item

This planter is part of the Eternit fiber-cement vase collection, designed by Swiss industrial design pioneer Willy Guhl (1915–2004), who is also known for creating the iconic Loop Chair in 1954. When Eternit introduced the first fiber-cement roof tiles in Europe, concerns arose about their durability. To address these concerns, they created vases to test the material's ability to hold water. The public responded so positively that the company decided to keep them in production. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, such pieces became quite common in Brazilian gardens and homes. Initially produced in a gray hue for both indoor and outdoor use, the Eternit vases could be customized with paint to suit individual preferences. This particular model is known as Spindel or Jardim (which translates to "Garden" in Portuguese) and remains in its original condition, unpainted. About the designer: Swiss designer Willy Guhl is widely recognized for his pioneering work in the field of industrial design. Known for his organic and rugged approach to modern furniture and decor, Guhl's designs remain highly sought after by enthusiasts today. He studied at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, where he later taught for almost four decades. Along with his provocative garden elements and outdoor furniture, Guhl is perhaps best known for his iconic Loop chair, which he introduced in 1954. His affiliation with the Swiss neo-functional movement was all about simplifying design without sacrificing form, and he believed in achieving the most with the minimum of effort.

Brazilian Modern Coffee Table "Acqua" in Wood & Glass, Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1955
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this one-of-a-kind Brazilian Modern coffee table model ACQUA made in Ebony wood and glass by Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1950s, Brazil is nothing less than spectacular. There are three reasons why this iconic piece is so special: First, the coffee table (swivel structure and glass) haven't been altered. This specific design is very fragile resulting in very few of these existing today in its original shape. The wood has only been repainted and the glass has a couple of dents but besides that, the coffee table is in excellent condition. Second, this iconic design is one of Scapinelli most renowned, appearing in countless publications, such as Casa e Jardim publications (Brazil House & Garden) as well as Giuseppe Scapinelli’s book (images attached). Attached images Lastly, the piece is truly a masterpiece of design. The organic shape of the base truly evokes its name ACQUA (water in Italian) and the base can swivel on its axis changing dramatically in appearance looking like a different piece. The coffee table is showcased in our showroom next to a pair of Carlo Hauner armchairs, a Jorge Zalszupin Pullman Sofa...
