Large Refectory Dining Table in Elm, Designed and Handmade by Loose Fit, UK
About the Item
Solid Scottish Elm dining table with wedged mortice and tenon joints on the legs and wiggly feet. Based on traditional construction, with a chunkier and playful organic modern twist. Seats approximately 8-10 people.
This large table is made from solid timber, intelligent use of traditional joinery pulls the form together, creating a sturdy and durable piece of furniture. The legs are attached by knocking the 'keys' through the tenons to lock the pieces together to easily assemble or disassemble the table.
The thick, lozenge-shaped table top showcases Scottish Elm at its finest, the magical grain and growth rings can be admired for its rich complexity. The beautifully curved ends and rounded edges of the tabletop create a soft, smooth tactile surface which is a pleasure to feel. The loose tongues which help strengthen the joints in the tabletop staves add yet another subtle feature to be appreciated. This is modern craft at it's finest.
The wiggly feet give the table a playful character and is a modern take on traditional farmhouse tables that can be found in the antique shops in Hastings, East Sussex, UK where James the maker lives and works.
About James Torble and Loose Fit Furniture:
Loose Fit furniture is lovingly designed and crafted in James’ workshop in East Sussex. James is a maker fascinated by his craft and the possibilities of what can be created in British wood.
James designs and makes furniture to be fun to live with, while being sensitive to the demands of natural timber. He takes design inspiration from a wide range of sources, from English pub furniture to Aztec friezes. All Loose Fit furniture is joined by hand using traditional techniques with thoughtful and playful details which accentuate the natural robust beauty of solid timber.
Each piece of furniture is made by hand, using locally sourced British hardwoods, such as unwanted trees that councils have cut down. The skills of traditional joinery are kept alive with playful designs, well considered details and a love of crafting wood.
James has a background in fine art, having studied at Central Saint Martins College, London, before building himself a houseboat and developing a passion for furniture and design in the process.

Loose Fit was started in 2018 by James Torble b.1990 England, with the aim of creating elegant furniture, designed and made to last a lifetime. James has a background in fine art, having studied at Central Saint Martins College, London, before building himself a houseboat and developing a passion for furniture and design in the process. James is a maker fascinated by his craft and the possibilities of wooden furniture. His designs are perfect for now, lovingly joined by hand in English timbers. MATERIALS
Each piece of furniture is made by hand, using locally sourced British hardwoods, such as ‘unwanted trees’ that councils have cut down.
For bespoke projects recycled surface materials can be used in the design, such as formica and marmoleum.
Finishing is offered in natural oils or soap washes, which contain less harmful chemicals than commercial varnishes and polishes (some furniture polishes contain formaldehyde!). DESIGN
At the heart of the design is the desire to make pared back, classic pieces of furniture. Keeping the skills of traditional joinery alive with modern designs and well considered details.
