Bruno Mathsson for Karl Mathsson, coffee table, model 'Annika', ash, Sweden, 1950s. Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was born in Sweden as the son of a cabinetmaker. His interest in architecture and furniture design developed early in his life. From his first designs on Mathsson was eager to use new, innovative techniques and soon became specialist in bending of laminated wood. In 1937, he was represented at Expo Paris where he won the Grand Prix for his bed called ‘Paris’. This Expo helped Mathsson to get known worldwide. The manager of the MoMA design department got interested in his designs and started to collect and exhibit his pieces.
