Plank Table in historical wood by Danish Fine Cabinetmaker Malte Gormsen

About the Item

Unique plank table made at fine cabinetmaker, Malte Goermsen''s, workshop just outside of Copenhagen. The table is made from historical wood, Pomerian Pine, from 1801. Some years ago, cabinet maker Malte Gormsen stumbled upon some piles of ancient wood at an antique dealer in Denmark. When inquiring about the wood, he discovered, that it was part of a batch of wood that had been raised from Copenhagen Harbour during the 1970’s. Digging deeper into the story behind the wood, Malte Gormsen realized, that the wood had played an important part in one of the critical moments in Denmark’s history - The Battle of Copenhagen (Slaget på Reden): In 1801 Denmark was attacked by an English fleet led by Admiral Hyde Parker and Lord Nelson. Part of the Danish defence was some rafts (flaadebatterier) equipped with canons, and especially Flaadebatteri No. 1 under the command of the just 17-year old Peter Willemoes excelled. For three hours Flaadebatteri No. 1 was shelled in a direct confrontation with Lord Nelson, who had expected the entire naval encounter to last only one hour. This prolonged encounter made Admiral Hyde Park signal Lord Nelson to pull out of the battle, which led to the famous incident of Lord Nelson neglecting the order by putting the spyglass to his blind eye. After the naval battle, Flaadebatteri No. 1 and the other rafts were used in Copenhagen Harbour and eventually sunk to the bottom of the harbour, where it rested until it was discovered more than 100 years later. Information about the wood: Flaadebatteri No. 1: A giant raft measuring 44 x 1 meters. Equipped with 24 canons. Fleet wood is Pomerian Pine, a common term for pine trees in the area around the Baltic Sea, that has grown on poor soil and thus has developed very slowly. The result is a resin-rich hardwood that is very resistant – which is why it has survived 200 years in saltwater. Pomerian Pine is no longer used commercially. The fleet wood is thus extremely rare.
