Rare Large English 17th Century Walnut Gateleg Table

About the Item

A large and very impressive solid walnut double-gateleg drop-leaf table of deep rich colour. Mid-17th century, ca 1650. Dimensions: L or W: 71’’ (180 cm) flaps up, ie fully extended D 30’’ (77cm) flaps down H 30’’ (77cm) Nb. It is rare to find large gateleg tables of this early period in solid walnut. The simple 'gun barrel' supports help date this table to the early Commonwealth period (1649-1660). The double-gateleg construction gives this design great stability. Will comfortably accommodate ten people. A useful and original working drawer at each end. Lovely old characterful condition with historical repairs commensurate with its age. Original frame, drawers, legs, stretchers etc. One or two later strengthening/ stabilising pieces added to the underside, as one would expect. Retaining an old 'Cowdray' inventory label dated 1919. Cowdray is The Honourable Harold Pearson (Weetman Harold Miller Pearson 2nd Viscount Cowdray), aka The Right Honourable / The Viscount Cowdray (peer and MP). During the last 66 years we have encountered fewer than six tables of this rarity, originality and remarkable size. A rare English 17th-century oak refectory table. Charles II-period, ca 1675. The three-plank cleated detachable top is of superb color, figuring and patination. Raised on six baluster supports united by stretchers. The frieze is guilloche-carved on all four sides: this demonstrates that this table can be free-standing. Many of these were only carved on three sides. This versatile refectory table can be used as a hall table, dining table, serving table, or a wonderful kitchen table. A number of early oak pieces which we have sold have harmonized very well with modern interiors. A similar-sized refectory table (in generally poor condition) sold for £17,000.00 plus buyer's premium, in Duke's auctioneers ATHELHAMPTON HOUSE sale, Puddletown, Dorset, UK, 9th Oct, 2019. Nb. The turning of the supports on this antique table indicates a development away from an earlier, heavy, carved bulbous leg, to a simpler baluster leg of the late-seventeenth century. However the guilloche-carved frieze is a hint of an earlier period. Some historic restoration commensurate with 350 years of use. Overall in superb condition. Dimensions: 8’5’' L. (256.5 cm) 2’8’' W. A rare German Baroque (Barock) superbly-carved oval mirror. Early-17th century, circa 1620-1630. The frame is exquisitely carved. The cresting with two cherubs supporting a cartouche, and seated upon displaying eagles. The base centred by a grotesque mask typical of this early period.
