One of a kind dining table in Portoro Gold marble, with brass profiles, signed on the base by Willy Rizzo, designed in the 1970s. The top has a rectangular shape, rounded on the longest sides. The foot is solid, and is made up of vertical marble sheets or strips. These design details are precisely what create an aesthetic of light lines, preventing the table from looking too heavy. Refined Portoro gold marble is a very peculiar and impressive type of marble. This is a precious variety of black limestone found mainly in the western Gulf of La Spezia, northern Italy, and in smaller quantities in the Mediterranean and China. Its luxurious appearance is achieved thanks to the glossy black background and the veins in golden yellow and beige tones that contrast with the depth of the black. The name Portoro derives from the Italian translation of the French term porte d'or ("golden gate"). In English this variety of marble is known as “black and gold”. Historically it has been used in artistic objects, always for unique and exclusive pieces, given its limited availability and its unmistakable beauty. It is, without a doubt, a spectacular work, perfect for a spacious dining room looking for the definitive touch of luxury and exclusivity. Willy Rizzo (1928-2013) Willy Rizzo was a renowned Italian photographer and designer. Famous for his original and creative genius, his designs became icons of Italian furniture. He was born in Naples, although as a child he moved to Paris with his family. He soon developed a great interest in photography, and at the age of 12 he made his first portraits. Shortly after, he was hired by Paris Match magazine, during which time he photographed stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Saint Laurent, Chanel, Jane Fonda, Fred Astaire, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso... as well as important events, such as the Nuremberg trial or various fashion events. Later, he also worked for Vogue and Harper's Baazar. In short, he was a photographer in the golden age of photojournalism, after World War II. As for his career as a furniture designer, he began in Rome in the 1960s. One of his first releases was 1966, a collection of furniture inspired by the modernist line of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, including tables travertine marble dining table with steel accents. His style is based on comfort, solidity and utility, and his originality derives from his independence as a creator. He himself said “When I rented an apartment in Rome, in 1967, I wasn't interested in period furniture, so I started creating my own furniture. I hated the furniture of the time and designed pieces of steel and leather, solid and geometric”. He revived the use of materials such as bronze and marble and the craftsmanship of manufacturing. In this way, he distanced himself from his contemporaries, who since the end of the 50s concentrated on serial design and exploring the possibilities of materials such as plastic. Renowned Italian furniture designer Willy Rizzo is celebrated for having produced eye-catching, sensational showpieces that merged plush fabrics with wood, metal and glass. Influenced by European modernists and drawing on the spare forms and clean lines of the American mid-century modern style, Rizzo prized functionality and simplicity in his dazzling work.

Born in Naples, Rizzo never intended on designing furniture. Instead, he began pursuing photography at the age of 12. By the 1960s, he had become a notable photographer, having captured images of such celebrities as Marilyn Monroe, Fred Astaire and Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. His experience with furniture design came about inadvertently when he moved to Rome in 1966. There, Rizzo rented an apartment with his wife Elsa that he described as "practically uninhabitable." Dissatisfied with the Scandinavian furniture options on offer, Rizzo built sofas, coffee tables and other furniture to suit the space's strong modern vibe. When his friends saw what he had accomplished, they were enamored by his furniture creations and commissioned him to build similar items for them.

The demand for Rizzo’s furniture grew from there. He established a production facility and workshop in Tivoli, just outside of Rome, which grew to house over 150 employees. There, finding inspiration in the work of iconic architects including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, he created more than 30 unique furniture designs. Over the years he opened boutiques around the world to showcase and sell his furniture.

Rizzo prided himself on seamlessly blending the contemporary with the classic. “It was about creating something new for a traditional setting,” he said of his work. From his sleek sideboards to his low-profile side tables, elegant chairs and entire living room sets, Rizzo's style sensibility is evident throughout every detail of his designs.

Rizzo sold his company in 1978 and returned to photography. However, the presence of his furniture resonated into the new century and is sure to impact interior décor enthusiasts into the next. Over the years, high-profile collectors of Rizzo’s work have included French actress Brigitte Bardot, Salvador Dalí and American musician Lenny Kravitz.
