19th C. Victorian Walnut Sutherland Drop Leaf Table with Turned Baluster Legs

About the Item

19th c. Victorian walnut Sutherland table with two drop leaves. the top is raised on elegant turned baluster legs on original brass casters. This particular type of drop leaf table, or gate-leg table, is known as a Sutherland table, apparently named after Harriet, the Duchess of Sutherland, in 1833. What characterizes these Sutherland tables is the very narrow top when the leaves are down, and their trestle bases, which have two fixed legs and two movable legs joined by a long stretcher. (The movable legs swing out underneath each leaf for support when the table is fully extended.) These are fabulously functional tables. It is convenient being able to fold them up against a wall where they take up a small amount of space when not in use. Dimensions: 28.5"h x 35.75"l x 7"w (closed), 30.5"w (open), Condition: Good, surface distress, scratches, scuffs, nicks, some cracks and edge chips consistent with age and use. Shows well. Ready to place. Provenance: A Private Collection: 139 East 95th Street, NYC.
