American Sheraton Dropleaf Two Drawer Mahogany and Birdseye Maple Work Table

About the Item

American Sheraton dropleaf mahogany two drawer worktable with birdseye maple drawer fronts and original mahogany turned knobs. This country table continues the Sheraton gestalt with somewhat bolder ring turnings to the legs than would have been done ten years earlier. The birdseye maple drawer fronts add lightness and interest and balance the visual impact of the boldly turned legs. The table is finished on all sides so it can be used in the middle of a room where the back might show. This table is often called a worktable, as women tended to put sewing implements and accessories in the drawers and would use the extended surface available when the leaves were up for fabrics and other necessities one would use when sewing. This table never had a sewing bag, probably because the dropleaves added enough work area that it was not needed. Circa 1835.
