From the book, Mauchline Ware by John Baker:
"Fernware was produced in smaller quantities than the other main finishes (of Mauchline Wares) and it seems that three, if not four, different processes were used. In most cases, actual ferns were used either directly, or indirectly. The majority of Fern Ware appears to involve the application of various types of fern to the wooden surface, which was then subjected to a dark brown stipple treatment before the removal of the ferns and subsequent varnishing."
