French Mid-19th Century Farmhouse Cherry Extending Table
About the Item
French Provincial cherry and chestnut extending farmhouse table of the mid 19th century. The table is 78 1/2 inches long but hidden under the table top are two leaves that pullout and extend the length to either 113" or 148". The runners that guide the leaves have been changed so that the table, when extended, is level, both when one leaf is pulled out or both leaves are pulled out. They are also more robust so there is no deflection when one puts ones elbows on the table. (Yes, Mom, I know we aren't supposed to do that anyway). We felt we had to replace the original runners as they were not substantial enough to have no deflection, nor did they self level. As is often the case in these farmhouse tables, the top surface is all cherry, but the pullout leaves are only framed in cherry, with the centers being chestnut; a wood which is somewhat darker than the cherry. Very often these pullouts were used for cutting bread or serving so they got heavier wear than the top, hence you will notice a color difference from the light cherry color of the bulk of the table and the darker cherry and chestnut of the leaves. This table has been totally restored and is now ready for every day use. circa 1850. 34 1/2" wide x 78 1/2" long (not extended) x 30 1/4" high; 24 1/4" knee room from floor to skirt. Length with one leaf extended: 113"; Length with both leaves extended: 148" (12'4")
