About the Item

An Extremely Rare And Very Attractive, Good Quality, Early 19th Century French Cherry Wood & Chestnut Extending Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Table, The Well Figured Rectangular Top With Double Drawleaf Ends To Comfortably Seat 16 People, Raised Above Shaped Frieze With Elegant Cabriole Legs Terminating On Hoove Type Feet. Its difficult to know where to start with explaining this table, how fabulous it is and also just how versatile it is in terms of allowing the option of such a large dining table from such a sensibly and practically sized base. It is extremely rare to find any type of french farmhouse kitchen table of this size, particularly one that is in such nice condition and also early 19th century as opposed to late 19th or even early 20th century like so many others. In short, when in non extended form the table is a relatively typical attractive early french farmhouse table, which is very elegant and retains a good rich colour. However it conceals two large pull out draw leaves, one to each end, which when fully extended, with the additional hinged legs in place allows this table to seat a comfortable 16 people on a perfectly level table top surface. There is also an option to use the table for a smaller number of people than 16 by pulling out each end any distance up to about halfway whilst keeping the legs folded in and that will allow a smaller number of people than 16 to sit at the table whilst still offering more spaces than the table in its standard position with the ends fully pushed in. The only thing to be aware of here is that the ends will sit around an inch or so lower than the middle of the table due to the fact the middle top only drops down to the same level as the ends when they are fully extended. Still however this versatility is an extremely useful option to have. Overall the condition of the table is very good and mostly original with the feet as later replacements, which is extremely common on this type of table due to the fact they spent most of their lives historically standing on damp stone floors and the bottom of the legs would eventually rot away. Not a problem we need to worry about in the modern heated home of course! Also worth mentioning is that when fully extended there is a minor misalignment of the end leaves to the central top due to the natural movement of the wood over the years, again this is something very minor and to be expected with age which certainly doesn't affect the table visually, or functionally, in any way whatsoever. We think this is one of the nicest french farmhouse tables we have ever owned and certainly one of the most practical. The possibilities contained within its size are endless and it is certainly a piece of furniture which can be utilised and enjoyed on a daily basis whilst also being exceptionally well suited to entertaining a large number of guests when required. As with all objects which we offer for sale this farmhouse table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, specialist antique furniture restorers and received a natural beeswax polish before being offered for sale, ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement and use within the home after purchase. Georgian Mahogany Dropleaf Dining Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
An Extremely Good Quality, Mid-18th Century, George II Period Solid Mahogany Oval Drop Leaf Dining Table, To Seat 8 People, Having Extremely Well Figured Two Flap Top Retaining Exceptional, Rich, Untouched Colour And Patina, Raised On Four Elegant Turned Legs Terminating With Original Pad Feet. Georgian drop leaf dining tables of this design are relatively common to find, however it is rare to find one of this size and in this condition, which retains such a fabulous colour and patina. It is also quite nice to find an oval one, which is not far off being circular when extended. This is a superb example of its type, constructed from what would have been the absolute best solid mahogany available in the mid 18th century and because of that the table is still as fit for purpose as the day it was made. It is particularly solid even with the moving legs fully extended and this allows for great functionality. Of course another tick on the desirability scale for this table is that it can be easily folded down and even pushed against a wall, or into a corner when not in full use, meaning one does not require such a large dining room as may otherwise have been required. The table also retains a fabulous untouched colour and patina and has very clearly not ever been stripped and repolished or anything like that. Seating 8, this table is one of one of the most desirable antique dining table forms available and would work with a whole variety of different dining chairs...

Regency English Mahogany Antique Extending Dining Table

A fine quality late regency period mahogany extending dining table retaining exceptional colour and patina to well figured top with two original removable leaves raised on elegant turned and fluted legs with superbly carved corner patrae & original brass castors (With a whole plethora of options available in terms of antique dining tables it can be an absolute mine field trying to decide which suits each individual purpose. This particular example is worth considering for a variety of reasons, not least the fantastical overall quality and excellent choice of timber selected. It also retains a good colour and patina. The extending design is of the full out type which is generally seen in the earlier Georgian and Regency versions, the wind out design more commonly seen is generally regarded as a Victorian and later feature. Another advantage of this design is that there is just the 4 corner legs which allow maximum flexibility in terms of chair and human leg...
