About the Item

18th century chess and backgammon table South Germany Walnut Louis XVI around 1780 Dimensions: H x W x D: 73 x 99 x 64 cm Description: Tapered downward square legs with fine carvings. Cross-shaped curved central bar with thread inlays. The interchangeable top with marquetry inlaid checkerboard can be detached and removed via a latch underneath the frame. The back of the board is covered with felt - as a base for dice and card games. Below the top, a backgammon board is recessed into the table, also marquetry inlaid. Fun Facts: A very popular table form, which acquires significant importance for decorative room art, especially in the 18th century, is the game table in its many variations. Basically, the gaming table serves as a means for table games such as cards, dice, checkers, chess, but also backgammon, ball games and other forms of games unknown today. These tables often have the features required for the particular type of game in the form of recesses, designated playing positions or, especially often, playing fields depicted in the form of marquetry. It is noticeable that many game tables are worked in a symmetrical four-sidedness, i.e. all four table edges allow in each case a game party to take part in the game. In addition, there are often versatile drawers mounted in the frame to store the game pieces, figures, cards or dice.
