About the Item

This "chess table," as we call it, has a chessboard on its top surface, with the chess squares made using the intarsia technique. The light squares are made of maple wood veneer, while the dark ones are made of maple veneer stained with black mordant. The chessboard is framed by four segments of walnut wood veneer, which cover the rest of the square top surface of the table. The top surface of the table is constructed so that it can be unfolded, transforming the small table into a card table. The surface of the card table is covered with green baize and has shallow, round, brass token trays built into each corner. Below the top surface, the small table has a drawer with a brass handle on the front, intended for storing chess pieces, decks of cards, and game tokens. On the back, there is a so-called "false drawer," which looks like a drawer on the front but does not open. On the sides of the drawer, carved decorative elements in the form of pilaster capitals with grooves and spiral volutes are inserted. The small table has four legs made of solid walnut wood, shaped using the turning technique in the form of balusters. The legs are connected at the bottom by transverse crosspieces in the shape of the letter "X." Below the transverse crosspieces, so-called "bun feet," also made using the turning technique, are attached to the legs.
