About the Item

Antique chess table Southern Germany Walnut, cherry tree 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 70 x 49 x 49 cm Description: Piece of furniture standing on a three-piece base with a centrally mounted table leg. The square table top conceals seven drawers (originally there were eight) in its frame, which can be used to store chess pieces, playing cards and the like. The fronts of the drawers, like the table leg and the base, are decorated with geometric marquetry. The chessboard is made of light wood, the dark fields are coloured. Even the apparent thread inlays of the surrounding edge are not inlaid wood, but dyed. The playing field lies slightly recessed in the tabletop and is surrounded by a mitred edge made of walnut. The individual fields measure 4 cm x 4 cm. Condition: The table has been restored with complete patina preservation. Sanding was not necessary. The piece of furniture has a wonderfully warm and absolutely authentic colour. The shellac polish has a slight sheen. The table top is slightly warped, which is clearly visible in some of the photos. The warping of the wood does not hinder the everyday usability and playability of the table, it is another authentic age feature and adds to the character of the piece of furniture. There is partial black discolouration on the playfield, which would certainly have been to the detriment of the original coloured wood to clean. The price refers to the table. The chess pieces are not for sale.
