The clean and bold profile of this antique English rosewood game card table is striking. Constructed during the William IV period, circa 1835 in England this antique game table is sheathed in exotic rosewood notable for being an imported timber and therefore considered a luxurious material. The curved front corners include both the folding top and the apron to make a seamless band. The table top is made to fold open and slide or swivel before resting flat. When the game table top is partially open the recessed storage space for game pieces or cards is revealed. Notice that the interior of the game table is not finished as the only person to see the interior originally would have been the servant who set the table in place for a game. The playing surface has been covered in a tooled leather with a gilt trimmed edge design (most likely to replace the old worn felt). The leather top makes this antique game table entirely suitable for use as additional dining seating when having a party. The entire game table top stands upon a cylindrical column that has eight sides and tapers from wider to more narrow as it approaches the base. This geometric profile adds a handsome element to the table's overall appearance especially when contrasted with the four well carved feet that elevate the base. The column is contained within a circular concave dish whose curved shape relates to the four curved sides of the base with its architectural emphasis. As mentioned earlier the four feet are carved with a lion paw and each retain their brass caster so the table may be easily moved. When closed and against a wall this table measures 36" wide x 18" deep x 29 1/2" high.
