Peculiar and original ebonized wood table with white marble top; legs taper downward, have slight grooves and metal guards at the ends; On the perimeter of the upper floor was placed an elegant pierced railing made of golden brass; the excellent marble used for the top is a "Bianco Gioia Venato" from Carrara, which is very distinctive and fascinating; Carrara marble is a type of marble that is extracted from the quarries in the Apuan Alps in the territory of Carrara (Italy), universally known as one of the finest marbles in the world; the special feature of this coffee table are the two drawers and the two pull-out shelves that are in the part under the top, in fact these were used to hold cards and gambling tokens! This is actually a real table for the game of "Buillotte." In Versailles in the 18th century, the main, perhaps the only, but devouring madness was that of gambling; huge sums of money were gambled, to the point that some public games were banned; but in the important salons of high society, gambling continued and the game of choice was precisely the "Buillotte". This game constitutes a variation of "Brelan" and is considered an ancestor of poker, is played with a deck of 20 cards (aces, kings, ladies, 9, 8) between players varying in number from 2 to 5. Dealt 3 cards each, each player attempts to make the highest value trio by replacing one or two of their own cards with as many taken from the deck. The game was so popular that special tables of the same name were introduced for that very purpose. These tables were usually round in shape with a diameter of about 27 to 30 inches, with an openwork brass gallery surrounding the top, which was often made of marble. The gallery may have contained a second top made of leather or felt on which to play, however, these second tops were delicate and easily perishable, and over time have been damaged or lost; in any case, antique Buillotte tables are attractive whether or not they have second tops and in high demand today. Bouillotte's table thus has several functions, it can be used as a writing table, game table, coffee or tea table, console table, gueridon etc. The "Buillotte" born around 1770 continued to be played assiduously until the late 19th century, so to equip rich living rooms, cabinetmakers made Bouillotte tables of all kinds, but always of high quality; to illuminate the table during game nights, first so-called Bouillotte flashlights then similarly named lamps were placed on the removable table tops. Our "Bouillotte" side table was created between 1870 and 1890 in a cabinet-making workshop in Paris where master craftsmen made it by hand respecting the ancient techniques and materials of the years of the birth of this extraordinary piece of furniture. The coffee table is in good condition, only one of the metal end feet of the legs has sagged a few millimeters, so you will simply have to put a small shim to evenly balance the legs.
