About the Item
A Very Fine Quality Early 19th Century, Regency Period, Goncalo Alves Games Table, Having Superbly Figured Drop Flap Top, With Removable, Reversible, Sliding Top Inlaid With Chess Board, Enclosing Backgammon Board To Interior, Over One Frieze Drawer Retaining Original Turned Wooden Knobs Opposed By False Drawer To Reverse, Raised On Extremely Elegant Reeded Turned Legs And Original Brass Cup Castors.
There is much more to this lovely little table than one might initially realise. A very well thought out design, based around designs by Gillows of Lancaster, it serves as both a useful little lamp table, or small centre table, but also of course for its main purpose as a games table. There is both a chess board and a backgammon board included and should there be a need then the chess board can be taken and used elsewhere whilst the main table is in use for backgammon.
Constructed from wonderfully attractive and striking Goncalo Alves veneers, the table is superb quality in terms of both construction and the materials used. This is particularly highlighted by the cedar wood drawer linings, which is a feature often reserved for use in only the very best 19th century cabinet making workshops.
The games table also retains its original turned wooden knobs, which are significantly more elegant than can often be the case and still stands on its original brass castors. These are of substantial size and quality and are really quite lovely to look at, whilst also ensuring that the table is still very easily moved around into place.
As with all items which we offer for sale it has also been inspected by our highly skilled, traditional furniture restorers in our workshops to ensure it is in tip top condition and ready for immediate placement within the home before being put out on sale. It has also received a traditional, natural wax polish.

Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet.
As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from.
Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table.
Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed.
The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position.
As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture...
