About the Item
Tavolino da gioco a pianta quadrata con quattro gambe tronco piramidali; il piano inserito in una cornice è dotato di una molla di sblocco che permette, sia di toglierlo per accedere al vano contenitore inserito nella fascia, sia di ribaltarlo per posizionare il lato rivestito dal panno da gioco. La cornice ove alloggia il piano è intarsiata con una greca a nastro. Il piano ha una grande riserva centrale in noce d’india quadripartito trattenuto da una cornice intarsiata con un motivo di foglie susseguenti fiancheggiata da quattro larghe bordure contenenti dei motivi a foglie d’acanto alternate, negli spigoli quattro piccole riserve quadrate contengono dei rosoni fioriti. Il tavolo è impiallacciato in noce d’india, bois de rose, mogano, radica di noce, acero, bosso.
Come ben documentato da Giuseppe Beretti nei primi anni del XIX sec. la bottega di Giuseppe Maggiolini si trova a produrre un importante numero di tavolini da gioco, sia per richieste private che per la corte napoleonica. Le tipologie sono principalmente due, i tavoli apribili, col piano che raddoppia e quelli quadrati o rettangolari col piano ribaltabile, come questo descritto. Una molla permette di sganciate il piano alloggiato nella cornice e così girarlo sul piano da gioco. Il decoro che orna in maniera dominante questo piano è l’elegante bordura con questo gioco di foglie d’acanto che si susseguono e alternano. Nel “Fondo Maggiolini”, conservato al Gabinetto dei Disegni del Castello Sforzesco, si conserva il disegno di questo motivo, catalogato FM A 347. In realtà si tratta di un motivo tratto da una proposta di Albertolli che fu pubblicata anche nella raccolta di “Ornamenti diversi…”, stampata nel 1782.
Nel 1807 la Bottega Maggiolini dovrà far fronte ad una richiesta per Palazzo Reale di Monza, di un grandissimo numero di tavolini simili, oggi ve ne sono conservati ancora una trentina circa, ed è il motivo per cui nel Fondo Maggiolini si conserva una gran quantità di disegni riferiti a questi tavoli da gioco. La qualità esecutiva come sempre è elevata e distintiva della produzione.
