Rustic Industrial and Work Tables

RUSTIC STYLE

For some, the phrase “rustic style” suggests a house like “La Pitchoune,” the late chef Julia Child’s cottage in Provence, with its exposed wooden beams and well-worn antique furniture. For others, rustic furnishings and decor prompt images of a place like the Lake Placid Lodge in Upstate New York, with its stone fireplaces and knotty pine paneling. Indeed, rustic furniture design takes many forms: twig furniture, a plank trestle table, a hand-stitched quilt, a chandelier made of deer antlers.

The rustic style originated in the late 1800s in England, where it was heavily influenced by Romanticism. By the 20th century, it had spread to the United States, adopted by wealthy New Yorkers and the National Park Service alike. Although there are many categories of rustic furniture, one of the most popular and familiar manifestations of the style is the 1903 Thomas Lee Adirondack chair.

Rustic design is perhaps mostly about texture and humble materials: hand-hewn wood, woven rush seating, wrought iron, coarse stone and weathered metal. As a decor, it exudes warmth and honesty, while a single piece of countrified design adds an intriguing visual counterpoint in a sleek, modern environment.

Easily identifiable by its rough textures, earthy colors and natural materials, rustic furniture helps bring the beauty of the outdoors inside. As you can see on 1stDibs, rustic wares offer no end of inspiration.

Rustic Antique American Farmhouse Weathered Work Table
Located in Forney, TX
A one-of-a-kind rustic antique American country work table in original plum - wine paint finish with heavily worn distressed patina! Full of antique character and unique folky charm, featuring primitve hand-crafted farmhouse craftsmanship and solid wooden construction, having a plank boarded top, simple wide apron with pegged detail, rising on distinctive spool-turned Jenny Lind legs terminating in tapering ring-turned feet. This rustic folk art table most likely originating in the Southern United States, handmade during the early/mid-19th century by a farmer, not a formally trained carpenter or furniture maker, adding to the overall antique character, elegant warmth, and rich historical depth. Dimensions: (approx) 33" High, 64" Wide, 31" Deep Provenance / Acquisition: Acquired from reputable auction house Bright Star Antiques Co., Sulfur Springs, Texas. May 2022 Session 1.5 catalog. Founded on generations of experience in rare antiques and furnishings, Bright Star has been specializing in rare American country antiques and architectural elements for over 25 years. Condition: Beautiful age, weathered patina and attractive faded mellow coloring. Heavily worn, naturally distressed, chippy paint, losses, warping, slight wobble, substantial wear and tear consistent with age and use. Not overly strong or sturdy, but certainly functional and delivered ready for immediate use. Jenny Lind’s Legs? Johanna Maria Lind (Sweden; 1820–1887) spent many nights in the U.S. during her wildly popular concert tour, presenting an opportunity for furniture makers to claim that P.T. Barnum’s Swedish Nightingale rested in one of their beds. Celebrity endorsements—sanctioned or not—had been found to boost sales, and 19th-century entrepreneurs had little aversion to stretching the truth. By the time she returned to Europe, Jenny Lind’s name or likeness had been affixed to riding hats, cigars, dolls, perfume, and more. Still, the association between spool-turned beds and the name “Jenny Lind” appears to be a 20th-century phenomenon, likely an attempt to conjure a connection to simpler times after the fact. Several bits of folklore connect the opera star with specific beds. The most widespread asserts that Philadelphia furniture manufacturer George J. Henkels placed a special bed—actually, a carved Rococo piece with a side canopy—in Lind’s hotel, and later gave it to her as a gift or, in a divergent ending, vowed to name it after her. A second story centers on a common, early 19th-century mahogany spool bed...

Antique 19th c. American Carpenter's Workbench c.1890-1900
Located in San Francisco, CA
About An original Maple carpenter's workbench with inlay tray on the back used to house larger tools. There are 7 "dogs" spaced along the width of the front. Pegs were placed in the dogs to hold a piece into place while working on it. The bench features two wooden screw vises that work properly and extend out. The piece is structurally sound and has retained the naturally distressed look of an industrial piece of this kind. Creator Unknown. Date of manufacture c.1880-1900. Materials and techniques Maple. Condition Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Round cast iron plate on the front vice is missing the bottom portion. Refinished in an oil and paste wax. Shellaced. Dimensions H 32.5 in. x D 31 in. W 54.5 in. History A workbench is essentially a table fitted with various holding devices, such as benchstops and vises, made sufficiently strong and massive to be used for a variety of woodworking operations. The modern workbench derives from two separate pieces: a table for planing wood and a bench for supporting wood to be sawn. Designs have changed over the centuries, beginning with low Roman planing benches and slowly growing in height to present day hand-high benches, and acquiring different accessories. French benches of the 17th and 18th centuries, for example, depended largely on stops and dogs to hold the workpiece, whereas British and American benches relied more on various vises (which first appeared on medieval German benches...
