About the Item

This incredibly rare lowboy came from the Yale University Mabel Brady Garvan Collection.
This fine and rare antique American dressing table/lowboy was deaccessioned from the Yale University collection many years after it was gifted by Mabel Brady Garvan, an almost identical dressing table from the same collection was at Sothebys Auction in 2022 with an estimate of $150,000-$250,000 (please see the details from the auction below).
The catalogue entry including a photographic image from 1931 from the Garvan Collection was very kindly provided with thanks to the Yale University Art Gallery. The dressing table is in very good antique condition, a rare and highly important piece of early American furniture. The table comes with a certificate of authenticity
The dressing table is in very good antique condition.
Literature; Mabel Brady Garvan collection at Yale University (see Gerald W.R. Ward, American Case Furniture in the Mabel Brady Garvan and Other Collections at Yale University)
Exceptional Queen Anne carved & figured maple dressing table Philadelphia PA circa 1760, from the Yale University Collection, Mabel Brady Garvan Collection, height 33 inches, top 23" x 42". Provenance: Francis P. Garvan (1875 - 1937), New York; gift to Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, 1930
Few Queen Anne dressing tables possess the exceptional proportions displayed in this exquisite dressing table. The form is further accentuated with the cabinetmaker's choice of crafting the dressing table from vibrantly figured maple. The original openwork cast brass hardware is the table’s only opulent aspect. It is however the subtle embellishments of a notched corner top, fluted chamfered corners, shell-carved knees and delicate trifid feet that successfully combine to create a synergistic masterpiece.
