About the Item

Mid 18th Century English provincial George II lowboy. Circa 1750. This fabulous lowboy is of small proportions and oozes character and charm, having the original finish, which shows a superb deep patina. The drawers all work well, the interiors are made of oak. It still retains the original plate handles, which is rare. The lowboy is veneered in walnut, mahogany and fruitwood over pine construction. The moulded overhanging top is cross banded, echoing the drawer fronts. Standing on solid cabriole legs. There has been a historic repair to the back left side and some veneer replacements. A couple of pieces are missing from the top to note. The top has had some shrinkage movement, resulting in a slight opening and difference in shape. There are marks and signs of use all over the lowboy. Some historic woodworm to the back and the pad feet. This has been treated as a precaution, but appears dormant. The lowboy is sturdy in structure with no loose joints - a very useable piece of furniture.

It has has been sympathetically re-finished, still retaining some authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage. To the left hand side near the back there is some slight damage to the banding and a small piece of veneer has been re-glued back on near the escutcheon of the third drawer down. Please refer to the photographs. The drawers are lined in oak with handmade dovetail construction. The drawer sides have had slivers of oak added to make the drawers run better. The underside of the top has neat butterfly construction to the oak join, always a sign of a well made piece. There is no woodworm.
