Gabriel Viardot French Nest of 4 tables japanese Art Nouveau

About the Item

Extraordinary and one of a kind set of nesting tables with decoration following late 19th century Japanese style, attributed to the renowned French artist Gabriel-Frédéric Viardot (1830 - 1906). The tables have decorations of turtles, rats, bonsais and reeds, all elements of clear Japanese symbolism, very fashionable at that time and throughout the Art Nouveau period. Japan had just opened its doors to Europe and it was such a refined and exotic art that artists from all over the world were influenced by it. The top of the tables supports an inlay with other woods and thin sheets of gilded brass. The sides of the tables that make up the legs and chambranas are an ode to Japanese art, with a framework of carved wooden lattices full of oriental symbols, impeccably exquisite in their aesthetics and design. Frances Gabriel-Frédéric Viardot (1830-1906) is one of the most important figures in furniture production in France at the end of the 19th century. He was an important wood carver and cabinetmaker in the orientalist style, specifically reproducing a Chinese-Japanese inspired style. In 1853, he had a factory and a furniture store at numbers 36 and 38 rue Rambuteau. At this time, Gabriel Viardot was working with his brother, Louis Gustave, under the name "Viardot Brothers and Co." In 1860, he created his own workshop, "G. Viardot" at number 5 rue Grand-Chantier, and took charge of the family business that he maintained until 1872. He decided to dedicate himself to "Chinese-Japanese style furniture", which he could see predominantly at the Universal Exhibition of 1867. At this same exhibition, Viardot was awarded four medals. With this production he won a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1878. He then worked consecutively at number 15 Chaume Street, at number 3 Archives Street in 1878 and at number 36 Amelot Street at the end of century. His furniture was made from lacquered and carved panels sent directly from China or Japan and decorated with Tonkin mother-of-pearl inlays. He enlivened his furniture with bronze ornaments, of which he made all the designs by hand. As the years went by, his success only grew, especially at the exhibitions in Nice and at the 8th exhibition of the Central Union of Decorative Arts in 1884. In 1885 he participated in the Universal Exhibition in Antwerp, where he obtained a gold medal. At this time, the shop employed between 90 and 100 workers, sculptors or cabinetmakers, many of whom were directly educated by Gabriel Viardot. As a result of this exhibition, Gabriel Viardot was promoted to the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honor (December 29, 1885). In 1889, he was at the World's Fair in Paris and was awarded a gold medal. He obtained the same award at the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
