19th Century Black Lacquered Chinoiserie Tea Table with Painted Scenes

A very lovely chinoiserie table in black lacquer with decorations in gold paint of scenes from Chinese village life that include: Men astride horses holding nets with dogs afoot, women strolling along a path with pagodas and houses in the distance and birds overhead. Table offers one drawer and rests on Chippendale-influenced cabriole legs terminating on ball-and-claw feet. England, circa mid-19th century (or possibly late 18th century). chinoiserie, French for "Chinese-esque" is a recurring theme in European artistic styles since the seventeenth century, which reflect Chinese artistic influences. chinoiserie entered the European repertory in the mid-to-late 17th century; the work of Athanasius Kircher had a lot of influence on the study of orientalism. The popularity of chinoiserie peaked around the middle of the 18th century, when it was easily assimilated into Rococo by the works of François Boucher. It declined when it seemed to European eyes the very antithesis of neoclassicism. Measures: 38 long x 22 1/2 deep x 29 1/2 high.
