About the Item

I fine Swedish Art Nouveau mahogany side table from the Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Stockholm ca 1905. A beautiful table with a contoured top with underlying shelf, fluted legs, leg handles with wood-cut, stylized orchids. It is stamped NORDISKA KOMPANIET and underneath with inscribed drawing number 2147/109005 PROVENANCE The model taken in up in the NK archives with customer "Dir Lundberg". This most likely refers to Karl Ludvig Lundberg (1851-1928), Nordiska Kompaniet's CEO between the years 1902-1912. After his father's death, Lundberg, who was born in Nyköping, took over his business operations, and further developed the business to become one of Stockholm's leading retail companies. In 1902, Lundberg further consolidated his position in Stockholm's commercial life, by forming together with Josef Sachs, another prominent business man at the time, the first Nordiska Kompaniet, which opened in the city center. In 1904, the business was further developed, when Nordiska Kompaniet started its own furniture manufacturing. The large-scale workshops were moved to Lundberg's hometown of Nyköping, and Nordiska Kompaniet soon came to occupy a leading position in Swedish furniture art. At its peak, the workshops employed around 500 people, where skilled craftsmen produced high-quality furniture designed by some of the most prominent designers of the time. Judging by the table's low number series, the piece of furniture was designed around 1905, i.e. shortly after furniture manufacturing started in Nyköping. Although this early period involved some of the big names of the day, it is today difficult to identify individual designers, as the names were not used in marketing, and as most of the drawings of the time have been lost. Among the well-known designers of the time, NK's first chief architect (1902-1917) David Blomberg should be mentioned, and also important names in design history such as Alf Wallander and Ferdinand Boberg - both of whom designed art nouveau items for the company. It has not been possible to determine who designed the table. It would be expected, however, that when director Lundberg himself ordered a table from the workshops he had just founded in his home town, the task should have gone to one of Nordiska Kompaniet's top designers.
