Bentwood modernist side table by Gemla Fabriker, Sweden, 1930s

About the Item

Rectangular side table with four bentwood legs made from solid beech, black tabletop and shelf. Produced in Sweden in the 1930s by Gemla Fabriker in the small community of Diö. The manufacturer Gemla was founded in 1861, and soon Bohemian craftsmen with experience from Thonet’s bentwood factories were recruited. With them, the innovative method of bending wood was introduced in Sweden, and still today, modern versions of these traditional models are produced by Gemla.
