About the Item

A tradition dating back to the Northern Song dynasty (960 to 1126), wine tables have been used for centuries as a gathering spot to serve food, sip wine, and give toasts. This 19th century elmwood wine table follows this time-honored tradition, but deviates from convention in its latticed apron and flush corner legs. The table's frame is carved to mimic stalks of round bamboo, a favored motif in late-Qing furniture, as it expressed humility for past construction methods and upheld Taoist values of naturalism.
