About the Item

This is the Swedish Modern side table in walnut stained birch by Otto Schulz. It comes with a round tabletop, beautifully veneered in birch, displaying a refined geometric pattern. The table has four elegantly turned, baluster-shaped legs supported with a linked cross construction. The piece displays balanced proportions and fine craftsmanship. The underside of the tabletop is burn-marked “Boet”, and it retains a small red-and-white label reading “SVT Sveriges Television Rekv. GBG”, indicating its provenance. The table previously belonged to the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation, SVT, in Gothenburg, where it was part of their film and studio prop collection. ____________________ Heinrich Albert Otto Schulz was born on December 3, 1882, in Salzwedel, Germany. He was a somewhat contrary architect and designer who today, about 50 years after his death, is regarded as one of Sweden’s most accomplished figures in modern design. Schulz studied at the Technical University in Charlottenburg from 1900 to 1907. One of his most important teachers was Alfred Grenander, a Swedish architect best known for designing more than 70 underground stations in Berlin! Through Grenander, Schulz moved to Sweden in 1907 for an internship. He received training and later employment as a draftsman with Selander & Söner in Gothenburg, and ultimately decided to settle down there. In 1910, he established his own practice, specializing in interior design. In 1917, Schulz received the prestigious commission to design the interiors of Bräutigam’s Confectionery, and in 1920, together with Adolf Nordenberg, he founded the furniture and interior design company Boet, with a showroom located at the corner of Kungsportsavenyn and Kristinelundsgatan in Gothenburg. The store functioned as a comprehensive interior design shop with an inspirational exhibition room on the floor above. As a brilliant complement to his store and showroom Schulz published his own magazine, “Boet”, which between 1927 and 1938, was both influential and widely read, covering topics such as home culture, craftsmanship, and industrial design. Otto Schulz not only designed furniture and lighting. He also created numerous public interiors and several ship interiors. He patented three manufacturing techniques: “Bosaik”, a moisture-resistant mosaic surface treatment; “Botarsia”, a decorative wood technique using brass pins; and perhaps the most renowned, the pearl-nail decoration known as “Bopoint.” Much of Otto Schulz’s history and work is documented in the book “Otto Schulz: Furniture and Interior Design 1910–1950.” Otto Schulz passed away on February 14, 1970, in the Vasa Parish of Gothenburg.
