Dutch Art Deco Amsterdam School colourful pedestal in its original paint, 1920s

About the Item

A large and colourful pedestal or plantstand, very recognizably Amsterdamse School period, 1920s. The colours of the paintwork are very similar to paintwork by Jan van Zeeland, a designer from the Dutch Art Deco period who is known for his hand-painted side tables and objects. The piece has the original paintwork in orange, green, red and purple. There are signs of aging and patina. It's completely original and unrestored. This slightly bizarre looking object makes for a great conversation piece. Also a perfect addition to the collection of an Amsterdam School enthusiast. And a daring, out of the box choice for eclectic interior designers. It's a unique piece, original painted objects like these are very hard to come by and increasingly popular as interior accent pieces. The pedestal is stable and sturdy, the wood is most probably pine. Pictures taken in different types of natural light and angles to bring across a good impression of the colours, condition and details Background information Amsterdam School ''The Amsterdam School'' stands for the Dutch architectural movement that flourished between 1910 and 1940. The movement influenced other art forms such as sculpture, furniture design and urban planning. Some characteristics of the Amsterdam School include: Expressionist and organic shapes, decorative sculptural elements and a focus on craftsmanship. The Amsterdam School movement is seen as a very important chapter in Dutch architectural history and to this day a very recognizable and beloved style worldwide. ''Amsterdam School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style from the period 1910-1930 by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer en J.M. van der Meij. The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognisable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre. Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
