Early 20th Century Louis XV French Marble Top Walnut Marquetry Oval Side Table
About the Item
Crafted in France circa 1920 and built of walnut, the oval table sits on four cabriole legs decorated with brass mounts at the shoulders, ending with bronze sabots. The Louis XV side table features detailed marquetry work around the apron, and is further dressed with a drawer decorated with geometric motifs. The surface is dressed with a "Breche d'Alep" marble top set inside a brass gallery rim around the perimeter. The elegant antique table is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina throughout. Use this petite fruitwood table as an occasional side table in a formal living room or next to a sofa to hold your drinks. The piece is stamped "FRANCE" on the bottom.
Breche d'Alep marble was extracted in the commune of Tholonet in Bouches-du-Rhône from 1712, then in Beaurecueil in 1735 and in Saint-Antonin in 1756. Against a yellow background, Breche d'Alep marble is made up of large rounded fragments of browns, greys, red or blacks. The Breche d'Alep marble was used a lot during the 18th and 19th century, and also the start of the 20th century, especially for furniture and fireplaces. The Carnavalet museum in Paris conserves a Louis XV chest of drawers in Chinese lacquer, legs from Madame Bouvier, with a shelf made out of Breche d'Alep.
