About the Item
This antique side table was crafted in the Late Meiji Era (1868–1912).
The top is made from solid zelkova (keyaki) wood, paired with legs crafted from cedar. The surface has developed a soft, uneven coloration over time—subtle areas of fading and patina that create a quietly expressive presence. A natural crack in the top further enhances its wabi-sabi character, embracing the beauty of imperfection and age.
The grain of the keyaki wood is faint yet visible, adding a gentle texture to the otherwise simple design. The table’s low height reflects traditional Japanese living, where furniture was designed for sitting directly on the floor, often on tatami mats. Though the height may appear unusually low by Western standards, this is intentional and culturally authentic.
Thanks to its clean lines and rectangular proportions, this piece can serve not only as a low side table or display bench, but also as a meditative tea table or even a minimalist entryway bench. Its simplicity allows it to blend seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Cleaned and disinfected with a non-toxic solution.
As an antique piece, minor scratches and marks may be present, each adding to its unique charm and the story it tells over time. It has been carefully inspected and remains in excellent antique condition, with natural signs of age that enhance its character.
