Mid-Century 1950s Vintage Giuseppe Scapinelli Side Tables

About the Item

Giuseppe Scapinelli was an Italian-born architect and designer who worked in Brazil. He founded the Sao Paulo Museum of Art in 1946 and the eponymous Biennale five years later. In 1950, Scapinelli founded his agency and promoted a modern style rooted in the classical principles of Italian design. The industrial aesthetics of Streamline influences his dynamic shapes and cleverly combines ornaments with a sense of modernity. This pair of side tables by Giuseppe Scapinelli, designed in the 1950s, exemplifies the refined elegance and sculptural sensibility of Brazilian mid-century modern design. Each table features a rectangular top in light marble, its soft, natural texture bringing warmth and sophistication. At each corner, a small bronze sphere is positioned with deliberate precision, functioning both as a decorative element and a visual anchor. The slender legs, cast in metal, are gracefully tapered with subtle, turned details that recall classical forms reinterpreted through a modern lens. Their delicately flared feet provide both balance and a sense of lightness, enhancing the tables' overall elegance. The combination of noble materials—stone and metal—and the harmonious dialogue between structure and ornament make these pieces a testament to Scapinelli’s distinctive style, which bridges tradition and modernity with poetic restraint.
