Northern European Birch Decoupage Side Table in Biedermeier taste, 19th Century

About the Item

An unusual piece of a distinctly minimal presence, the craftsman utilized the pale nature of birch to center all focus on the vibrant decoupage decorations of the top. These are beautiful original pieces of art executed on a thick woven paper, the primary design press-printed with the colors and details then painted in by brush; the paper is then sealed to the top under a thick shellac. The centermost scene is a pretty intense depiction of animalistic demons sitting judgement over mankind, a pair sitting in the scales of justice while one found wanting is being tossed into the flames. A single drawer in the table operates smoothly, the untouched structure of thick pine hand dovetailed at the corners with a chamfered drawer bottom set in grooves on either side. The underside of the table is beautifully oxidized to a nut brown, the bar beneath the front of the drawer dovetailing into either of the front corners, the legs tenoned into the battens. A turned stretcher locks the simple sabre legs together. Such an interesting piece and a rather uncommon find. Measurements: 28 1/2” H x 23 1/4” W x 14 7/8” D Condition Report: Slight warp to front edge of the top. Craquelure to finish of top, some later ebonizing around decoupage. Discoloration to front edge of one leg, wear and finish blemishes here and there. No key.
