Phillip Lloyd Powell Pair of Solid Black Walnut Side Tables, Hand Carved 1960's

About the Item

This pair of side tables were crafted by Phillip Lloyd Powell, circa 1960's. It is likely that the tables were commissioned as mates showing relatively similar shape and dimensions. The surfaces of both tables have book matched grain and each have 4 dowels spanning the center. Carved from solid black walnut, the bases show Powell's iconic stacked and carved technique. This specific wood selection is also seen in George Nakashima's studio pieces. As they both had neighboring studios in New Hope, Powell would often buy rejected wood at a discount from the salesman making deliveries to the Nakashima Workshop. The tables have been restored. All carved surfaces have been cleaned and flat tops resurfaced and sealed. Phillip Lloyd Powell originally studied engineering at the Drexel University of Technology. Once he arrived home from World War II, he moved to New Hope and opened a retail store selling pieces by Knoll, Herman Miller, Isamu Noguchi, and many more. After being encouraged by neighbor George Nakashima, he began to craft and sell his own pieces alongside. Powell had a proclivity for incorporating found objects in his work and was continuously explorative. Several years into crafting his own designs, Paul Evans joined Powell's studio and created collaborative works -- Powell carving wooden forms and Evans sculpting metals. The collaboration lasted around a decade. Throughout his career of primarily commissioned work, Phillip Lloyd Powell has become one of the prominent names amongst the American Studio Craft movement. Price is for pair.
