About the Item

This diminutive, yet elegant antique side table was hand-carved from oak in the early 1900’s. The table was produced in the Iberian Peninsula, which is colloquially used to define Spain and Portugal, but the peninsula includes parts of Southern France and Andorra as well. Given the geography of the peninsula, styles developed in these countries at a similar rate, often making it hard to determine where furniture was produced. However, our oak side table shares characteristics with Spanish and Portuguese tables that date back to the Late Middle Ages. Tables were designed to quickly disassemble for transportation purposes, as frequent moving was common during these times. Wrought iron braces on the underside of the table (ours intersect in an “X) were attached to cross stretchers. A bolt could quickly be loosened to remove the top from the legs. Our table has similar construction, although the top does not separate from the base. Because these tables were designed to be practical, ornamentation of the tabletop is usually minimal. Our table has a molding adorned with tulip-like carvings that repeat along all 4 sides. The table sits on four highly turned splayed lyre legs with onion feet. The turned cross stretchers are fitted with round dowel pegs and a rectangular block in the middle where the iron braces are pinned. Today this great looking 20th century oak side table can be used in homes of nearly any style. Its size is perfect for smaller areas of the home.
